generates all the headlines, Vanderbilt\u2019s offense is built around its rushing attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vandy\u2019s strategy, especially against quality opponents, is to run the ball in an effort to control the clock and shorten the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The strategy has resulted in the Commodores ranking 133rd in pace of play, allowing them to wear down defenses as the game progresses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason the strategy works is Vanderbilt\u2019s incredible offensive line, which has become arguably the best run-blocking unit in the nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vandy uses a unique approach to offensive line play \u4e00 I went into more detail on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharpfootballanalysis.com\/betting\/best-bet-missouri-vanderbilt-betting-picks-week-9-2025\/\">strong-side\/weak-side strategy last week<\/a> \u4e00 and it\u2019s allowed the unit to dominate in the trenches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on opponent-adjusted data from <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.sisdatahub.com\/cfb\/Leaders\/Players#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sports Info Solutions<\/a>, Vanderbilt running backs lead the nation in yards before contact per attempt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most matchups, that has given the Commodores a decided advantage in the ground game, but Texas might be up for the challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas ranks eighth in opponent-adjusted yards before contact allowed \u4e00 easily the best unit Vandy has faced to date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further complicating things for the Vandy offense in this matchup is its predictable scheme that allows opponents to stack the box at a high rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vandy running backs have faced seven or more defenders in the box on 77% of carries, the nation\u2019s fourth-highest rate per Sports Info Solutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how has Vanderbilt generated such a strong rushing attack with such a predictable scheme?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a look at where Vandy\u2019s power-conference opponents rank in yards per attempt allowed with a stacked box:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Carolina: 78th<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia Tech: 82nd<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alabama: 88th<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missouri: 91st<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LSU: 92nd<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you remove each team\u2019s game against Vanderbilt from the equation, only Missouri\u2019s rank jumps into the top 60.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now look at Texas\u2019 run defense with a stacked box, via data from Sports Info Solutions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yards per attempt: 2.9, ranked 11th<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early contact rate: 55%, ranked 18th<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuff rate: 28%, ranked 11th<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will certainly be a unique test for Vanderbilt\u2019s rushing attack, but the Commodores might just be too dominant on the ground to be slowed down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When running into a stacked box, Vandy running backs are averaging an absurd 7.3 yards per attempt, leading the nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To provide some context to that number, consider that during his remarkable 2024 campaign, <\/span><b>Ashton Jeanty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u4e00 primarily playing against Mountain West defenses \u4e00 only averaged 6.2 yards per attempt into a stacked box.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Texas\u2019 run defense prevents Vandy from dominating on the ground, however, the edge in this matchup goes to the Longhorns due to Pavia\u2019s struggles as a passer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Pavia is a critical part of the Commodores offense due to his legs \u4e00 he\u2019s averaging 64.3 yards per game on the ground, excluding sacks \u4e00 he doesn\u2019t have the downfield passing tools to run the offense efficiently in obvious passing situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On throws 10 or more yards downfield, Pavia ranks 66th in completion rate per Sports Info Solutions, and 76th on throws of 15 or more yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t help that Vandy\u2019s offensive line is less effective in pass protection than the run game, and is likely at a disadvantage in this matchup based on these opponent-adjusted numbers from Sports Info Solutions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanderbilt: ranked 52nd in pressure rate allowed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas: ranked 23rd in pressure rate generated<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pavia\u2019s chaotic play is also a slight concern against a pass-rush unit like Texas, as he\u2019s prone to mistakes under pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a quarterback always willing to chase the big play, Pavia generates an EPA of 1.0 or higher on 24% of his dropbacks versus pressure, ranked 15th. That\u2019s the good news.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he also generated -1.0 EPA or worse on 32% of dropbacks versus pressure, ranked 63rd.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A boom-or-bust quarterback is great for the entertainment factor, but this might be a challenging matchup against a disciplined Texas defense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\t<div class='sfa-image-adds' style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">\n\t\t<a href='https:\/\/www.sharpfootballanalysis.com\/newsletter\/'>\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sharpfootballanalysis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Sharp-Football-Analysis-Newsletter-Ad.jpg\" class=\"attachment-size-full size-size-full\" alt=\"Sharp Football Analysis Newsletter\" \/>\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n<h3><b>When Texas is on Offense<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas has leaned on a slightly pass-heavy offense this year despite the struggles of <\/span><b>Arch Manning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/campus2canton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Campus2Canton<\/a>, the Longhorns throw the ball at a rate 3.5% above expected based on situational data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible that approach could change this week, however, as Manning is in concussion protocol and his status is up in the air.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Manning can\u2019t suit up, his backup, <\/span><b>Matthew Caldwell<\/b>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would likely take over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caldwell is a redshirt-senior in his first year with the Longhorns, having previously played at Jacksonville State, Gardner-Webb, and Troy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s difficult to imagine<\/span><b> Steve Sarkisian<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trusting Caldwell, who began the 2024 season as the backup at Troy, to execute Texas\u2019 typical game plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, Texas doesn\u2019t have much of a rushing attack to pivot to, and might be at a disadvantage on the ground based on these opponent-adjusted numbers from Sports Info Solutions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas: ranked 92nd in yards before contact<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanderbilt: ranked 116th in yards before contract allowed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas: ranked 89th in yards after contact<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanderbilt: ranked 20th in yards after contact allowed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Vanderbilt does not have an imposing run defense, it does appear to hold an edge against Sark\u2019s spread offense, which typically creates light boxes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out how these teams stack up with six or fewer defenders in the box, which accounts for 59% of Texas\u2019 handoffs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas: 4.4 yards per attempt, ranked 104th<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanderbilt: 5.4 yards per attempt allowed, ranked 67th<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Texas does need to throw the ball with Caldwell, the Longhorns will need a conservative attack due to his issues as a downfield passer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year at Troy, Caldwell\u2019s 49% on-target rate on throws of 10 or more yards downfield ranked 130th.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the same can be said if Manning starts, as his 51% on-target rate doesn\u2019t inspire confidence either.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surprisingly, Texas has been an aggressive downfield passing team \u4e00 perhaps showing a bit of Sark\u2019s stubbornness as a play caller.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside the red zone, 30% of Texas\u2019 pass attempts have been 15 or more yards downfield, the eighth-highest rate in the nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questions about Caldwell and Manning aside, this is a viable approach to attacking Vandy\u2019s defense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commodores rank 119th in completion rate allowed at that depth (51%), which gives Texas some hope its aggressive downfield attack might work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the reasons Texas\u2019 commitment to the downfield attack has been so confusing is the Longhorns' struggling offensive line.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s check out the pass protection battle based on opponent-adjusted data from Sports Info Solutions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas: ranked 113th in pressure rate allowed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanderbilt: ranked 70th in pressure rate generated<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although neither unit is particularly strong, Vanderbilt likely has what it takes to disrupt the Longhorns\u2019 predictable passing attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manning has taken a traditional dropback 63% of the time, the 20th-highest rate in the nation, which invites more pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s take a look at Vandy\u2019s pressure rate on traditional dropbacks versus quick dropbacks (zero\/one-step dropbacks and RPOs):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditional dropbacks: 46%, ranked 35th<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quick dropbacks: 21%, ranked 73rd<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vandy doesn\u2019t have any edge rushers who can instantly blow up the play, which explains the poor production on quick dropbacks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a unit, however, the Commodores get after it and can likely be disruptive against Texas\u2019 style of play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Caldwell starts, there\u2019s a chance Texas could lean into more quick dropbacks \u4e00 he took a quick dropback 44% of the time last year at Troy \u4e00 but it would require a significant change in Sark\u2019s approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas\u2019 19.9% quick-dropback rate ranks 123rd in the country, and on those plays, the Longhorns are only gaining 6.0 yards per attempt, ranked 91st.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Final Thoughts on Texas vs. Vanderbilt Best Bets<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas might struggle to be competitive if Manning doesn\u2019t suit up, but even if he\u2019s back out there, this looks like a tough matchup for the Longhorns, so let\u2019s <\/span><b>take Vanderbilt against the spread<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Longhorns struggled to sneak by Kentucky and Mississippi State on the road the last two weeks \u4e00 two teams that are winless in the SEC play \u4e00 so why should we trust them against a strong Vandy squad?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helps Texas to be back at home, but Sark has not defended his home turf all that well over the years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Sark\u2019s tenure at Texas, the Longhorns have been favored by 7.5 points or less at home six times, going 2-4 against the spread with three outright losses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"sf_image_divider\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\"
